Course Requirements (M.A. Level)

Nine courses are required for the masters degree, currently:

  • 6 required:

         200A, 200B, 200C, 201A, 201B, and one of {213A, 213B, 213C, 185A/209A, 217, 203*, 236*}

   (*) were acceptable selections in 2009-10 only.

and

  • 3 electives, from Linguistics 202 through C209, 211 through 219, 236, 244, 104, 111, or 140. In 2010 spring only: 252A (with Jessica Rett) is an elective option. (237 will also be considered as an elective by petition.)

Please note that all courses taken for the Linguistics MA degree MUST be taken for 4 units, and for a letter grade.

The required courses do not all have to be taken in the first year, but as a rule of thumb, try to take at least seven required courses in your first year, and if you intend to take Field Methods in your second year, try to take eight required courses in your first year.  The syntax and phonology sequences should be taken in the first year. It is strongly recommended, but not required, that students take Linguistics 210A and 210B during the second year of study.
