Installing Gentium on your PC

If you're having trouble installing Gentium or other such fonts on your PC, here is a step-by-step list of what to do:

1. First download this file. Save it onto your desktop for easy access.

2. The file is zipped, so you have to unzip it. If you have WinZip, unzip the whole Gentium folder in WinZip and extract it back to the desktop.

3. Open the new unzipped Gentium folder, and copy the four .ttf files.

4. Paste all four into your C:\WINDOWS\FONTS folder. It should momentarily tell you that the installation is complete when you paste them.

5. Open Microsoft Word (or whatever).

6. Select "Gentium" as your font. (You can hit CTRL+D to change fonts)

7. In the main toolbar, hit "Insert", and then "Symbol". A table of symbols should appear.

8. Make sure the drop-down menu says "normal text" in the table of symbols.

9. Scroll down about halfway in the table. Do you see IPA symbols? Please do.

Remember, if you need to add a diacritic on top of or below a letter, first type the letter, and then hit "Insert" and "Symbol". Scroll down the table of symbols until you see the things labeled "combining tilde above" or "combining diaeresis below" and other such "combining" symbols. The "combining" symbols automatically attach to whatever letter you've just typed.
