Linguistics 192A/B Undergraduate Practicum

Linguistics 192A/B offers undergraduate students the opportunity to assist regular faculty members in the Linguistics Department by serving as course assistants for a Linguistics course that they have previously taken for credit or whose material they would have command of from having taking more advanced upper division courses.

Enrollment and work effort

Enrollment is by consent of the instructor only.

By prior arrangement with, and consent of, the instructor, a student may enroll for in 192A (4 units) or 192B (2 units). Grading is on a P/NP basis only.

Students enrolling for 4 units (192A) are required to serve as an undergraduate assistant for a minimum of 7 hours per week in an assigned setting for the 10-week quarter, and in addition, attend the class for which they will be assisting and meet at least one hour per week with the faculty instructor for training and consultation.

Students enrolling for 2 units (19B) are required to serve as an undergraduate assistant for a minimum of 6 hours per week in an assigned setting for the 10-week quarter. These hours may include, by arrangement between the student and the instructor, a combination of assigned duties, class attendance, and an obligatory scheduled weekly meeting with the instructor

During Summer Sessions, students enrolling for 4 units (192A) are required to work a minimum of 74 hours over the 6-week session and in addition attend class meeting; students enrolling for 2 units (192B) will spend approximately half this amount of time, with time distributed as determined by the instructor.

Regulations Concerning Linguistics 192A/B

Junior or Senior standing is required. 

Students must do the work in the same quarter that Linguistics 192A/B is taken for credit. 

Linguistics 192A/B does not satisfy any major requirement for any of the majors within the Linguistics Department. 

 

Activities That May Be Performed

With the approval and supervision of the faculty instructor, assisting in the preparation of materials and development of innovative programs to complement or enrich the faculty instructor’s teaching of the course. 

Assisting students with technical matters, such as using special computer applications. Such assistance may NOT directly contribute to the completion of a student’s coursework that will be submitted for grading by the instructor or TA. 

Being a discussion leader for a small number of students who meet each week to discuss special topics related to the course, subject to the following restrictions: (1) student-led discussion sections may NOT substitute for the instructor’s scheduled lecture sections or for the graduate student Teaching Assistants’ scheduled sections; (2) student-led discussion may NOT directly address items on assigned work that will be submitted to the instructor or TA for grading—such discussions must take place only with the instructor or TA. 

Helping to proctor exams (Linguistics 192A/B students may not be the only proctors present at an exam).

Other tasks not mentioned in “Activities that many not be performed” below and not substituting for instructional activities that are the purview of the instructor and/or TA.

Activities That May Not Be Performed

Grading papers or exams or serving as a reader.

Giving lectures to an entire class.

Meeting with discussion sections of a course that are regularly scheduled and listed in the Schedule of Classes.

Being responsible for the designing or teaching of a course or a section of a course, selection of reading or student assignments, planning of examinations, evaluation of students’ performance in the course, or determining students’ final term grades.

Doing clerical work for professors or graduate TAs.

Instructor’s Responsibilities

The instructor must be a regular faculty member in the Linguistics Department (during Summer Sessions, the instructor may be a graduate student who is the primary instructor for the course).  The instructor is responsible for the following: training and supervising the student throughout the quarter; leading a one-hour weekly meeting; and evaluating the student’s performance.  Faculty instructors should remember that a Linguistics 192A/B student is not a substitute for a graduate Teaching Assistant and may not perform the functions of a graduate TA.  If a Linguistics 192A/B student’s information is listed on the syllabus, the title of “Course Assistant” or “Undergraduate Assistant (UA)”, not “Teaching Assistant (TA)” must be used.

Procedures for Enrolling

Contact a faculty member in the Linguistics Department for whose course you believe you are qualified to serve as an undergraduate assistant to see if that faculty member would be able to use an assistant enrolling under the conditions specified above for the 192A/B course.

Visit your College Counseling Unit if you need approval to take more than 5 P/NP units or are planning to exceed 19 units for the quarter.

Submit the completed Linguistics 192A/B Learning Contract with instructor’s signature to the departmental Student Affairs Officer by Friday of Week 2.

Using a PTE from the instructor, enroll in the 192A/B course via URSA.
