Details below. \nAlso note that the following week\, when some people are away at BU\, the rest of us will do a “journal club” meeting\, so please come to this week’s meeting with any suggestions for articles you want to read/present\, in case there’s time at the end to discuss that. If not\, we will have the discussion online. \nWord order acquisition from immature representations: A model for noise-tolerant learning of deterministic grammars\nChildren acquire their language’s canonical word order early in infancy\, despite immature abilities to identify clause arguments. Prior work proposes that learning requires prosodic or semantic support. We demonstrate that it is possible for learners to learn word order only from strings of imperfectly-identified noun-phrases and verbs. Our modelled learner chooses among grammars that deterministically produce a canonical word order\, while also considering probabilistic processes that introduce noise into the data. In simulations on child-directed English and French\, the model successfully separated signal from noise in order to identify canonical SVO word order in both languages. We find that successful learning does not require prosodic or semantic cues to sentence structure\, but benefits from determinism in the learner’s hypothesis space. This provides an alternative mechanism for regularization in learning\, where tendencies to regularize emerge from the learner’s expectation that its data are a noisy realization of a deterministic underlying system.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us this Thursday at 4:15 for this practice BU talk: \nIntervention effects in Mandarin-speaking children’s comprehension of passives  \nMinqi Liu\, Victoria Mateu\, and Nina Hyams \nIn Mandarin\, passives with an external argument (EA) – “long passives” (1a) – are structurally different from “short passives” (1b)\, in which the EA is not projected (e.g.\, Huang 1999). Because the EA structurally intervenes in the dependency between the surface subject and its gap in long passives (2a) but not short passives (2b)\, the Intervention Hypothesis (e.g.\, Friedmann et al. 2009) predicts that (i) Mandarin long passives should be harder for children to comprehend – an Intervention Effect – and (ii) this Intervention Effect should decrease when the morphosyntactic features of the two arguments in long passives are distinct. \nWe tested 80 monolingual Mandarin-speaking 3- to 6-year-olds (M = 4;11) in a sentence-picture matching experiment with three sentence types (Actives\, Long passives\, and Short Passives) and found that long passives were the most difficult for children’s comprehension. \nFurthermore\, in this experiment we manipulated the classifiers of the argument DPs in order to examine the effect of featural match vs. mismatch between the two arguments in actives and long passives\, and to ask what kind of features is relevant in intervention. In particular\, we tested sentences containing one or two of these three classifiers: (i) a [PLURAL] classifier –xie that encodes the grammatical Number feature\, (ii) a shape-specific classifier -tiao that s(emantically)-selects for long-bodied entities such as snakes and fish\, and (iii) a general classifier –ge that is non-plural and not shape-specific. Data showed that a mismatch in Number (-xie vs. –ge)\, but not lexical properties such as body shape (-tiao vs. –ge)\, between the two arguments improves children’s comprehension of long passives\, but not actives. \nThese results are consistent with the predictions of the Intervention Hypothesis and support grammatical accounts to Intervention such as (featural) Relativized Minimality (e.g.\, Rizzi 1990\, 2004).

DESCRIPTION:Selecting contextually relevant alternatives during comprehension\n\nAn expression in focus is standardly taken to evoke a contextually salient set of alternatives to itself (Rooth 1992). In an influential study\, Husband and Ferreira (2016) proposed that these alternative sets are derived online from the set of semantic associates primed by processing a word in focus. The authors argue that this process occurs via a selectional mechanism which maintains the activation of alternatives while that of non-alternative primes decays. However\, the semantic associates of foci are not always a superset of the contextually salient alternatives. For instance\, imagine a mural depicting a tank driving through a meadow. In this context\, ‘tank’ is a likely alternative to ‘flower’ in “Silvia only painted the [flower]F on the mural” despite the fact that these words presumably do not prime one another. Such examples present a gap in the literature and a possible challenge to the strictest interpretation of Husband and Ferreira (2016)’s proposal. I hypothesize that focus alternatives are generated through the interaction of discourse context and the question-under-discussion (Roberts 1996). I present a probe task experiment in which the alternative status of a non-associate to focus is modulated by context\, but the sentence containing focus itself remains the same. This design helps to isolate the hypothesized effects of discourse/QUD from that of semantic priming.
