DESCRIPTION:Colin Brown: \n  \nMultiple wh-clefts and their answers \n  \nContent questions with multiple wh-expressions\, such as ‘whosaw what?’ admit two different types of answer: single-pair answers andpair-list answers. This does not hold for cleft questions with multiple wh-expressions\,such as ‘who is it that saw what?’ which allow only a single-pair answer. Inthis talk I pose the following questions: (i) why do interrogative clefts withmultiple wh-expressions not permit pair-list answers? and (ii) how do weaccount for the availability of single-pair answers for multiple wh-clefts? Isuggest that (i) is explained by adopting Dayal’s (2002) account of multiplewh-questions with pair-list answers\, which requires the structurally lowerwh-expression to undergo covert movement to a scope-taking position. I suggestthis covert movement is not available in the cleft-question as the presupposedclause is analyzed as a null-headed relative clause (Percus 1997)\, andtherefore is an island to movement. Turning to (ii)\, Reinhart’s (1998) choicefunction analysis of wh-in-situ can account for the availability of single-pairanswers without appealing to island-violating covert movement. I extend thisanalysis to a language (Sm’algyax; Tsimshianic) which does not allow multiplewh-questions at all\, and suggest that this ban is explained if\, in thislanguage\, (i) wh-questions are structurally cleft-like constructions\, and (ii)there is no wh-in-situ.

DESCRIPTION:Stefan Keine on Hindi/Urdu crossover asymmetries ( joint work with Rajesh Bhatt)\n\n\nWe investigate and analyze a crossover asymmetry in Hindi/Urdu scrambling: such scrambling is not subject to (secondary) weak crossover but at the same time shows clear (secondary) strong crossover effects. This asymmetry provides empirical evidence that the two types of crossover must be analytically decoupled from each other\, and it sheds new light on the factors that condition each type. We find that weak crossover is conditioned by the landing site of movement\, while strong crossover is determined by properties of the launching site. More specifically\, we propose that weak crossover follows from a syntactic restriction on the placement of an operator that is required for pronominal binding from the landing site. Strong crossover\, on the other hand\, is determined by the amount of structure present in the launching site\, which can itself be derived from Late Merge and nominal licensing along the lines developed by Takahashi & Hulsey 2009. DESCRIPTION:Maddy Booth: Possessives in San Cristóbal Lachirioag Zapotec \nIn this talk\, I will discuss construct state (CS) and free state (FS) possessives in San Cristóbal Lachirioag Zapotec (SCLZ). SCLZ is a previously undescribed VSO Zapotecan language spoken in Oaxaca\, Mexico\, in the Villa Alta district (Butler 1980). I will discuss Sichel’s (2002) analysis of Hebrew CS and FS\, and then show how though there are similarities between SCLZ CS / FS and Hebrew CS / FS\, particularly with respect to the placement of adjectives\, the analysis of Hebrew cannot fully account for SCLZ construct state and free state possessives. This adds to the typological work on construct- and free-state constructions and possessives\, both cross-linguistically and within Zapotecan languages. \nIn addition\, we will discuss and vote on the SynSem nominations for next year’s colloq speakers.

SUMMARY:Syntax Seminar w Hilda Koopman: A case study of Huave morphology-as-syntax
DESCRIPTION:My research focuses (in part) on the question to what extent morphological generalizations can be accounted for in terms of purely syntactic operations and conditions. In this talk I will present a case study and reanalysis of the morpheme orders in Huave (San Francisco del Mar)\, a language isolate spoken in Oaxaca. Its variable morpheme order has been argued in various papers by Yuni Kim (2008\, 2010\, 2015) to be driven by the phonology. I will show that a syntactic analysis is not only required\, but also feasible\, thus providing support for the morphology-as-syntax approach.

DESCRIPTION:“Deconstructing yes-no questions: what moves and what doesn’t”  \nBailey (2013) and Holmberg (2016) propose that the formation of yes-no questions involves a polarity phrase (PolP)\, the head of which is a polarity variable with open value ()\, realized as a question particle -ko/-kö in Finnish and A-not-A in Mandarin. The polarity variable moves to the left periphery to obtain sentential scope\, overtly in Finnish but covertly in Mandarin. Using novel data and diagnostics from two mutually intelligible Mandarin dialects\, Wuhu and Nanjing Chinese\, I argue that (i) yes-no questions involve at least two distinct functional projections\, a question phrase (QuP) and a PolP; and (ii) what moves in yes-no question is a Q-operator base-generated at Spec QuP\, whereas the polarity variable is interpreted in-situ throughout the computation and does not move.
