SUMMARY:Syntax-Semantics Seminar: Gereon Mueller (Universitaet Leipzig)\, "Structure Removal: A New Approach to Conflicting Representations"
DESCRIPTION:Gereon Mueller (Universitaet Leipzig) \nA standard assumption of earlier versions of generative grammar was that transformations can remove syntactic structure — either complete subtrees of a phrase marker (as in transformations like Passive\, Equi NP Deletion\, or Indefinite Object Deletion)\, or just certain nodes or shells (see\, e.g.\, Tree Pruning as envisaged by Haj Ross\, or Chomsky’s concept of S-bar Deletion). Subsequently\, based on a more principled approach to syntactic transformations with the Projection Principle at its core\, the hypothesis that trees could genuinely shrink in this way was generally abandoned. Current minimalist approaches maintain this assumption by postulating that syntactic operations can make trees grow (via Merge) or stay the same size (via Agree) but can never make them shrink. Against this background\, and with the Projection Principle long gone\, I will argue that there is every reason to postulate a general operation Remove that is as a complete mirror image of Merge and obeys exactly the same constraints (e.g.\, featural triggers\, strict cyclicity). Evidence for Remove is partly conceptual (upon closer inspection\, such an operation turns out to be implicitly adopted in standard approaches to minimalist syntax anyway)\, but mainly empirical (also see Chomsky (2014)\, Pesestky (2016)). I will illustrate the empirical relevance of Remove on the basis of six case studies from the syntax of German: (i) passive\, (ii) applicatives\,\n(iii) ellipsis\, (iv) restructuring\, (v) complex prefields\, (vi) tough-movement (= modal passive).

SUMMARY:Syntax-Semantics Seminar: Iara Mantenuro & Brice Roberts\, UCLA "Classifiers as nP heads in San Sebastián del Monte Mixtec"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nIn Mixtec\, nominal classifiers can occur both in compound-like constructions and in nominal\nconstructions with adjectives. \n(1) tí-ñòñò\n CFR:3animal-honey ‘bee’ \n(2) ti-lo’ò\n CFR:3sphere-small.SG ‘small one’ \nWe claim that in both cases the classifier is the head of the noun phrase. However\, while in\nconstructions with nominalized adjectives the classifier has referential properties (similar to\nthose of English one)\, in the compound the referential property is not available.\nThis paper offers a possible morphosyntactic account in the Distributed Morphology (DM)\nframework for the different occurrences of classifiers in Mixtec. Adapting an analysis offered for\nEnglish compounds (Harley\, 2009) we propose that in all instances of classifiers we are dealing\nwith heads of nominal nP projections\, but that in compounds the non-head noun incorporates

SUMMARY:Phonetics Seminar: Byron Ahn (Princeton)\, "In Search of Intonational Variation and Systematicity beyond ToBI"
DESCRIPTION:MAE_ToBI\, the gold-standard of intonation annotation for American English\, aims to provide an annotation system of the categorical (phonemic) aspects of intonation. In this way\, a single MAE_ToBI label is used for multiple f0 contours; thus\, by design\, many aspects of the prosody are not transcribed. If the ToBI labels are a primary source for linguistic analysis\, an important concern should be: without this untranscribed information\, can our models of intonation be complete? In this talk\, I will discuss a few of my ongoing collaborative research projects that aim to address this question\, and I will also workshop an (English-specific) annotation system which captures more phonetic variation\, and which is still under development. This type of work is highly relevant for intonational phonology (as well as for theoretical models that interact with intonation): until various types of intonational phonetic variation are better documented\, models of intonational phonology will remain incomplete.

SUMMARY:Syntax and Semantics Seminar: Byron Ahn "How to Build "Yourself" Up: Reflexive Anaphors from the Inside-Out"
DESCRIPTION:Explorations of reflexivity have looked at how a set of reflexive anaphors distribute in larger structures (particularly in clauses)\, taking for granted that reflexive anaphors constitute a natural class to which the grammar can make explicit reference (e.g.\, with binding principles). In this talk\, we will look more closely at how the internal structure of English “self-phrases” relates to their external distribution. We will conclude that self-phrases are morphosyntactically composed of (minimally) a possessive pronoun and a √SELF morpheme\, and that the reflexive distribution of an expression like “herself” comes about by a nominal-internal REFL morpheme being a local relationship with the nominal D head. This means that an English-style reflexive anaphor (i.e. a “self-phrase” whose distribution is constrained by binding principles) is a derived object; as such\, a reflexive anaphor is not a static [+anaphor] object in the lexicon. I will then speculate about grammatical operations involved in checking the phi-features of the pronominal component of the “self-phrase” (probably not Agree) and some intersections with semantics (types of meanings available depending on anaphoric form).
