SUMMARY:Psycholing/CompLing Seminar: Christian Muxica & Jesse Harris
DESCRIPTION:Selecting contextually relevant alternatives during comprehension\n\nAn expression in focus is standardly taken to evoke a contextually salient set of alternatives to itself (Rooth 1992). In an influential study\, Husband and Ferreira (2016) proposed that these alternative sets are derived online from the set of semantic associates primed by processing a word in focus. The authors argue that this process occurs via a selectional mechanism which maintains the activation of alternatives while that of non-alternative primes decays. However\, the semantic associates of foci are not always a superset of the contextually salient alternatives. For instance\, imagine a mural depicting a tank driving through a meadow. In this context\, ‘tank’ is a likely alternative to ‘flower’ in “Silvia only painted the [flower]F on the mural” despite the fact that these words presumably do not prime one another. Such examples present a gap in the literature and a possible challenge to the strictest interpretation of Husband and Ferreira (2016)’s proposal. I hypothesize that focus alternatives are generated through the interaction of discourse context and the question-under-discussion (Roberts 1996). I present a probe task experiment in which the alternative status of a non-associate to focus is modulated by context\, but the sentence containing focus itself remains the same. This design helps to isolate the hypothesized effects of discourse/QUD from that of semantic priming.

SUMMARY:Colloquium: Some Half-Truths and Interim Conclusions about Liaison- Anne-Michelle Tessier\, UBC
DESCRIPTION:A very complicated issue in understanding morpho-phonological alternations concerns those phenomena that are pervasive\, frequent\, and phonotactically-motivated\, and yet exceptionful and lexically-sensitive. To what extent are such processes\, that apply idiosyncratically to different morphemes\, words and even phrases\, represented in a way that generalizes to novel forms? \nThis talk examines this issue via the “well-plowed ground”* of French liaison\, specifically those liaison consonants that come and go at the boundary between nouns and the words preceding them (e.g. les [z] amis\, ‘the friends’). My main goal is to assess the predictions that different analyses make about (i) how exceptional nouns resist liaison\, and (ii) how productive liaison should be with novel nouns. I report the results of an adult production + acceptability study\, primarily with L1 speakers of Laurentian French in Quebec\, which find liaison to be somewhat intermediate in its application as compared with regular vs. exceptional nouns. I also discuss computational simulations and child corpus studies that try to understand how learners eventually reach the knowledge state of our adult participants.  The overall picture is one in which learners and speakers are making really interesting generalizations about their lexicons and their grammars\, including some more abstract than almost any model might predict?… but which also require substantial individual variation.

SUMMARY:Psycholing/ Compling Seminar- Bethany Sturmann: Subclausal quotation intonation and what it means
DESCRIPTION:Subclausal quotation provides an interesting use case for the integration of intonation into the semantic analysis of an utterance. In this talk I will present the key intonational features of subclausal quotation based on a corpus study\, as well as highlight ways in which quotation intonation expands our understanding of intonational theory. I will then show that the Emphatic Juncture is the intonational feature that is the best candidate for incorporation into the semantics based on the results of a perception experiment. I will then sketch an analysis of the meaning of the Emphatic Juncture as a metalinguistic operator. This talk is the presentation of the research output of my dissertation.

SUMMARY:Psycholing/ Compling Seminar: Lindy Comstock (Dept. of Neurosurgery)- Developing the auditory oddball paradigm as a tool for language mapping
DESCRIPTION:Successful language development after cerebral hemispherectomy is a vital concern for the well-being of children affected by intractable seizure disorders. Yet\, this area of research is underrepresented in the literature\, with only a handful of neuroimaging studies devoted to the reorganization of language areas after hemispherectomy. The goal of this project is to provide clinicians with a measure of neural connectivity to assess which pediatric hemispherectomy patients will ultimately develop language and what language-related impairments may arise. The proposed study will be the first to assess neural reorganization in hemispherectomy patients on the level of the effective and dynamic modular structure of connectivity networks\, calculated from cortical source-level EEG. The high-resolution EEG whole-brain analysis will provide both superior temporal and spatial localization of language tasks\, which can better reflect the extent of reorganization in pathological brains. Currently\, we plan to validate the test-retest validity of our measure in healthy control subjects. In this presentation\, I will briefly outline the objectives of the project and some of the relative literature. The main focus will be the development of a specialized oddball auditory paradigm. Discussion of the research design and recommendations are welcome.
