SUMMARY:Phonetics Seminar: Fernando Llanos (U of Texas\, Austin)\, "Reopening the sensitive period in adult learners of lexical tones"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Humans are excellent learners. Yet\, a notable and well-documented exception is the acquisition of non-native speech categories by adults. Speech category learning is supported by multiple systems and\, as we learn more about these systems\, it is becoming possible to improve perceptual behavior in adult learners. In this talk\, which reflects on my postdoctoral work with Bharath Chandrasekaran’s team\, I will discuss two potential ways to ameliorate second language acquisition of lexical tones: 1) high-variability training with trial-by-trial feedback and 2) sub-perceptual threshold peripheral nerve stimulation. Throughout this talk\, I will show how these techniques can be used to enhance the neural coding and perceptual categorization of lexical tones in adult learners.

SUMMARY:Colloquium with Kristen Syrett (Rutgers)
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link: https://ucla.zoom.us/j/98929850267?pwd=Y3hUdi9RSG5ITG9UT0ZGRUFReU5hdz09 \nMeeting ID: 989 2985 0267  \nPasscode: colloquium  \nAbstract: Making comparisons and interpreting comparatives in child language  \n \nRutgers University – New Brunswick \nFor many years now\, researchers in language and cognitive development have been plagued by children’s divergent non-adult-like productions of comparative constructions\, and their apparent inability to properly interpret even the most basic of comparatives (although researchers have also thrown some complicated ones their way!). The source of the difficulty has been alternatively attributed to a lack of understanding of language-specific comparative morphology\, a misinterpretation of the form of the adjective\, or a reanalysis of the syntax of the comparative. In this talk\, I will present evidence from a number of studies coming out of my lab in the last few years demonstrating that not only do children perform at or near ceiling with certain basic comparative constructions\, but they also have sophisticated knowledge of the adjectival scalar structure that feeds into comparatives\, as well as the syntactic and semantic building blocks in place to represent comparative structures. Why\, then\, does it take them so long across other tasks to properly interpret and produce comparative constructions? I consider multiple explanations\, and lay out a path for a promising line of future research on degree constructions in child language.  \nEmail the Colloquium Committee at uclacolloquium@gmail.com to be added to the listserv. For guest outside of UCLA\, please submit an RSVP for colloquiums you would like to attend.

SUMMARY:Syntax Seminar - Stefan Keine
DESCRIPTION:Stefan Keine on Hindi/Urdu crossover asymmetries ( joint work with Rajesh Bhatt)\n\n\nWe investigate and analyze a crossover asymmetry in Hindi/Urdu scrambling: such scrambling is not subject to (secondary) weak crossover but at the same time shows clear (secondary) strong crossover effects. This asymmetry provides empirical evidence that the two types of crossover must be analytically decoupled from each other\, and it sheds new light on the factors that condition each type. We find that weak crossover is conditioned by the landing site of movement\, while strong crossover is determined by properties of the launching site. More specifically\, we propose that weak crossover follows from a syntactic restriction on the placement of an operator that is required for pronominal binding from the landing site. Strong crossover\, on the other hand\, is determined by the amount of structure present in the launching site\, which can itself be derived from Late Merge and nominal licensing along the lines developed by Takahashi & Hulsey 2009. In addition to contributing to our understanding of crossover phenomena\, our argument also has implications for the A/A’-nature of scrambling (e.g.\, Webelhuth 1989\, Mahajan 1990\, Dayal 1994) and movement-type asymmetries more generally. \nZoom link:\nhttps://ucla.zoom.us/j/92921507388?pwd=STc2d3UxN1FMOEgxOGswR0labXFwUT09\nMeeting ID: 929 2150 7388\nPasscode: c-command

SUMMARY:Syntax Seminar - Maddy Booth
DESCRIPTION:Maddy Booth: Possessives in San Cristóbal Lachirioag Zapotec \nIn this talk\, I will discuss construct state (CS) and free state (FS) possessives in San Cristóbal Lachirioag Zapotec (SCLZ). SCLZ is a previously undescribed VSO Zapotecan language spoken in Oaxaca\, Mexico\, in the Villa Alta district (Butler 1980). I will discuss Sichel’s (2002) analysis of Hebrew CS and FS\, and then show how though there are similarities between SCLZ CS / FS and Hebrew CS / FS\, particularly with respect to the placement of adjectives\, the analysis of Hebrew cannot fully account for SCLZ construct state and free state possessives. This adds to the typological work on construct- and free-state constructions and possessives\, both cross-linguistically and within Zapotecan languages. \nIn addition\, we will discuss and vote on the SynSem nominations for next year’s colloq speakers.

SUMMARY:Laurel Perkins: Verb Learning and Event Representations in Infancy
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Thursday at 4pm to hear our own Laurel Perkins: abstract below. \nhttps://ucla.zoom.us/j/99418223045?pwd=YXQrM29FSWhVZ1dZMGdHdVd4c2Ftdz09 \nMeeting ID: 994 1822 3045Passcode: 398484 \nVerb Learning and Event Representations in InfancyInfants use the syntactic distributions of new verbs to draw inferences about the types of events those verbs describe (syntactic bootstrapping: e.g. Gleitman\, 1990). To determine how they do this\, we need to understand (1) how infants view particular events in the world\, independent of language\, and (2) how they relate particular sentence representations to those event representations. \nIn this meeting\, I’ll discuss work in collaboration with Angela Xiaoxue He\, Tyler Knowlton\, Jeff Lidz\, and Alexander Williams that aims to diagnose the structure of 10-month-olds’ nonlinguistic event representations. Then\, I will discuss a study that investigates how older infants (19-22-month-olds) relate clause arguments to perceived event participants when learning verbs. We ask whether infants primarily expect arguments and participants to match in number\, or whether they more flexibly link particular argument and participant relations\, e.g. transitive subject to agent and object to patient. Our results suggest that infants privilege the thematic content of clause arguments when drawing inferences about verb meaning\, which has implications for how richly they represent grammatical relations early in development.
