SUMMARY:Syntax Seminar - Vahideh Rasekhi: "Two types of why in syntax: Evidence from Why-stripping in Persian"
DESCRIPTION:Two types of why in syntax: Evidence from Why-stripping in Persian \nThis talk is an attempt to get audience feedback on my work in progress and prepare for my presentation at “Sluicing and Ellipsis at 50”\, which will be held at the University of Chicago in April. \nIn this work\, I provide an account of why-stripping in Persian (1)\, in which there is a wh-phrase cherā ‘why’ and a non-wh-phrase remnant (e.g. chips). This structure looks similar to sluicing with why\, as in (2)\, in which there is only a wh-phrase remnant cherā ‘why’. The question is whether why in these constructions has the same/different properties. I argue that why in these constructions has distinct properties and the mechanism of deriving these sentences is different. \n(1) Ayda chips khord\, vali ne-midoon-am cherā CHIPS\n Ayda chips ate.3sg but neg-know-1sg why chips\n ‘Ayda ate chips but I don’t know why chips (but not something else).’ \n(2) Ayda chips khord\, vali ne-midoon-am cherā\n Ayda chips ate.3sg but neg-know-1sg why\n ‘Ayda ate chips but I don’t know why. \nI propose that in why-stripping (1)\, why functions as ‘how come’ and is base-generated in the Spec of Int(errogative)P (Rizzi 2001)\, in the left periphery. On the other hand\, in sluicing (2)\, why functions as a regular wh-phrase in wh-questions and is focus fronted to the Spec of FocP\, prior to TP ellipsis. \nI discuss cross-linguistic generalizations and the predictions we can make regarding the positions in which why can be base-generated across languages.

SUMMARY:American Indian Seminar - 'Say' Fest (see below)
DESCRIPTION:Every quarter we have a Fest on some topic of general interest. This quarter it’s a ‘Say’ Fest (thanks\, Travis!!). If you’d like to share some linguistic tidbit about how ‘say’ works in any language (because every language is indigenous to somewhere) — constructions? inflection? quotatives? … — please bring 10-15 copies of a handout and be prepared to talk for 5-15 minutes\, depending on how many people want to participate. But even if you don’t want to\, please come!

SUMMARY:Phonology Seminar: Minqi Liu "English Adaptation in the Mandarin A-not-A Reduplication Construction"
DESCRIPTION:A-not-A is a Mandarin reduplication construction where the underlying form /RED-pu-A/ contains a reduplication of the first syllable in A. In this study I investigate the kinds of adaptations that occur when an English word serves as the base A. Since the complex onsets and most codas allowed in English are illegal in Mandarin syllables\, the reduplicated part is expected to adapt to Mandarin phonotactics to some degree. I ran a production experiment where 20 native Mandarin speakers were asked to produce A-not-A constructions with 55 mono- and poly-syllabic English words. Results from the experiment showed varied adaptation methods. To model the results\, I used a maximum entropy harmonic grammar with weighted constraints on syllable structure markedness and base-reduplicant faithfulness.

SUMMARY:Syntax Seminar: Richard Stockwell and Carson Schütze
DESCRIPTION:Richard Stockwell and Carson Schütze will be giving two joint practice talks for the Linguistic Society of America meeting in January. \n1. Dialects “haven’t got” to be the same: modal microvariation in English\nWe propose a unified analysis of dialectal differences between British (Br) and North American (NoAm) English regarding ‘have-got’ – its modal scope with respect to negation and its behaviour in verb phrase ellipsis (VPE). The outright ungrammaticality of negated universal deontic ‘have-got’ in NoAm is attributed to LF reconstruction of modal ‘have’ being blocked by the overt spellout of its trace as ‘got’; whereas in Br\, deontic modality resides in ‘got’ and no reconstruction problem arises. Meanwhile\, the ‘have’ of ‘have-got’ survives VPE in Br\, but undergoes it in NoAm where ellipsis means there is no overt ‘got’. \n2. Objectless Locative Prepositions in British English\nThis paper clarifies the cross-dialectal landscape and challenges Griffiths & Sailor’s (2015\, 2017) (G&S) A-movement analysis of objectless locative prepositions (OLPs) in British English\, e.g. This film-i has monsters in __i. OLPs are restricted to in and on for southern speakers\, reflecting a need for the possession to be inherent. We argue in favour of a null pronominal analysis\, which still covers G&S’s A-movement data\, but extends empirically to bound variable interpretations and typologically to Germanic R-pronouns.
