Support and advance research in the UCLA Department of Linguistics!
How Your Donation Makes an Impact
Consistently ranked one of the top Linguistics programs in the world, the UCLA Linguistics
Department is a global leader in conducting groundbreaking research on the scientific study of
language in areas such as phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, psycholinguistics, language
acquisition, historical linguistics, and mathematical linguistics. With multiple research
laboratories exploring language in the real world and an interdisciplinary approach that
critically engages all aspects of language across a variety of subject areas, the department
fosters discoveries that deepen our understanding of how language shapes the human
experience.
Your support helps make this work possible. Gifts to the UCLA Linguistics Department empower
exceptional undergraduate and graduate students, fuel innovative research, enhance hands-on
learning opportunities, and inspire thousands of UCLA students each year to discover the science of language through our renowned and comprehensive programs, which include graduate and
undergraduate degrees as well as language instruction in American Sign Language and Swahili.
By investing in the department, you are helping cultivate the next generation of scholars,
researchers, and educators while advancing knowledge that has a lasting impact on society.
Together, we can ensure the UCLA Linguistics Department remains at the forefront of linguistic
research and education.
How to Donate
There are many ways to support UCLA Linguistics’ research and programs. As the University
continues to sustain budget cuts and student fees increase, contributions to our discretionary
fund are of vital importance. Your support provides funding for student and faculty research,
graduate fellowships, colloquium and lecture events, lab research and personnel, and American
Sign Language programming. Help advance linguistics research and support our faculty and
students today!
Funds You Can Support
- Linguistics Department Discretionary Fund: Providing the most flexibility in use, this fund sustains our department’s mission and areas of critical need, including enriching our students’ educational experience, maintaining our faculty’s research and teaching, and supporting our programming needs.
- Robert Stockwell Scholarship Fund: In memory of late Professor Robert P. Stockwell,
this fund supports Linguistics graduate students working in the field of language change. - Peter Ladefoged Scholarship Fund: In memory of late Professor Peter Ladefoged, this fund supports the Ladefoged Scholarship Award, which offsets the expenses of graduate student research projects, including for language consultants and experimental subjects.
- UCLA Language Acquisition Lab:This fund supports the lab’s work in studying how infants tune into their native language and how children eventually develop the ability to produce grammatical sentences.
- UCLA Phonetics Lab: This fund supports the lab’s work in documenting sounds from a range of languages and describing the behavior of a language’s sound as part of a linguistic system. The lab maintains facilities for teaching and research in adult and infant speech production,
acoustics, and perception. - UCLA American Sign Language Fund: This fund supports our thriving ASL program, which teaches students sign language and the history of Deaf culture. Our popular ASL courses consistently fill and have a waitlist each quarter and during our summer intensive program.
