Advance Loans for Academic Student Employees (ASE/TA’s) and Graduate Student Researchers (GSR’s)

For those hired in Fall as a TA or GSR, your first employment check will not pay until November 1. However, you may opt to apply for an Advance Loan, which is an interest-free advance pay equal to 50% of your first monthly paycheck.

The advance loan will be paid back via automatic deductions in your first and second paycheck of the Fall quarter (i.e., November and December paychecks).

To apply for an advance loan:

  1. Verify that you are eligible
    • Your TA or GSR appointment is fully hired/active in UCPath for that application quarter
    • Minimum 25% appointment
    • Minimum 3.0 GPA (for continuing students)
    • Registered and enrolled in at least 12 units for that quarter who are applying
    • Have a signed offer letter (and supplemental letter for ASE’s/TA’s)
    • Have a signed and completed Statement of Understanding
    • Have approval from Dashew Center, if you are an international student
    • Have authorization for any appointments over 50%
    • Does not have unpaid advance loans from preceding quarters
    • First year graduate students that meet the above criteria are eligible
  2. Fill out the Advance Loan Authorization Form
    • Please visit the above link and form to double check the application open and close date for each quarter
  3. Return the form and below supplemental required documents to the GSAO via email for department approval no later than the Friday before the application close date
    • For Fall 2022, return the form to the GSAO no later than Friday, September 23, 2022 as the applications close Wednesday, September 29, 2022

    • Signed Initial Appointment and Supplemental letters
    • Signed and completed Statement of Understanding
    • Authorization for Appointments over 50%, plus Mentor letter (if applicable)
    • If student is international: must also include a copy of the Dashew Center approval
  • GSR:
    • Signed Initial Appointment Letter
    • Signed and completed Statement of Understanding
    • Authorization for Appointments over 50%, plus Mentor letter (if applicable)
    • If student is international: must also include a copy of the Dashew Center approval

After approval, double check your following paychecks have been deducted appropriately to pay back the loan. Failure to pay back the loan will result in ineligibility to receive a loan in future quarters
