ASL Successfully Spreads the Word (and Signs!) at UCLA World Languages Day

Published: January 27, 2026

American Sign Language (ASL), as part of the UCLA Linguistics Department, made an impactful showing at UCLA’s World Languages Day (held on January 21, 2026), thanks to the creativity and enthusiasm of UCLA undergraduate students enrolled in ASL 5: Intermediate American Sign Language (taught by ASL Lecturer Jennifer Marfino with additional assistance from ASL Interpreter Mariam Janvelyan). The students took the lead in designing an engaging booth experience that highlighted why learning ASL matters, promoting the ASL program and summer offerings, and showcasing what makes ASL classes both educational and fun.

ASL 5 students engaged visitors through hands-on games, including a Jenga activity with ASL vocabulary and an ASL sign-guessing game, making the booth one of the most popular at the event! Their enthusiasm, preparation, and ability to connect with attendees played a key role in the event’s success.
