Statement of solidarity

The faculty of the UCLA Linguistics Department have voted to endorse the following statement by a supermajority:

As faculty of the UCLA Linguistics Department, we urge the UCLA administration to pressure UCOP to bargain with the UAW in good faith and to take the bargaining position of the UC Graduate Student Associations seriously. This is necessary to bring UC’s graduate student employee salary scale, benefits, and resources into line with that of our comparison institutions, to account for the cost of living in California, and to keep pace with the rate of inflation, especially in rent and cost of living. This would bring a swift end to this extremely disruptive strike, and allow our department to offer competitive compensation to current and future graduate students. Our graduate students are critical to our department’s core mission of excellence in teaching and research, as they are to the UC’s.

The statements on this page represent the views of linguistics department members and do not necessarily represent the views of the University of California, or UCLA or its Chancellor.
