Graduate Student Fellowship Opportunities

All students should apply for as many funding opportunities as they are eligible, for many reasons:

  • Fellowships are terrific for your CV.
  • Fellowship funding permits you to spend more of your time on research and study (without needing to, say, TA).
  • Some fellowships come with funding to support additional research activities (for example, Grad Division’s Dissertation Year Fellowship includes a $500 research allowance).

The department offers several fellowships automatically to eligible students:

  • the Edward L. Keenan Mathematics & Language Graduate Fund offers stipend support to UCLA Linguistics graduate students in good standing who use mathematics to understand language, or who study theoretical computational linguistics.
  • the Robert Stockwell Scholarship Fund offers stipend support to UCLA Linguistics graduate students in good standing working in the field of language change.
  • the Theresa McShane Biggs and Henry P. Biggs Centennial Term Chair in Linguistics offers stipend support to UCLA Linguistics graduate students in good standing who are nominated by the Department Chair and the Biggs Chair holder.
