Psycho/CompLing Seminar – Shalinee Maitra

Mar 12 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
2122 Campbell Hall,

Can children use tense and aspect morphology to learn novel verbs?

How do children learn how their language marks tense and aspect? How do they disentangle what marks tense and what marks aspect? I consider these questions and present some preliminary results from a study investigating whether English-acquiring children can use tense and aspect morphology to learn novel verbs, as well as a planned follow-up study. Showing when children can use tense and aspect morphology to learn novel verbs bears on the question of whether this morphology can aid them in vocabulary learning, while also constraining the relevant time period for investigating how tense and aspect morphology are acquired.
