Congratulations to Laurel Perkins, who has been awarded an NSF grant with collaborator Jeff Lidz at the University of Maryland (#BCS 2236013 and 2236014).
The project, “Non-local syntactic dependency acquisition in infancy,” addresses three questions: (1) Do infants represent wh-dependencies as dependencies over strings or over more richly defined grammatical structures? (2) What mechanisms drive the acquisition of these dependencies? And (3) what consequences does early syntactic knowledge have for further language learning, such as the acquisition of verb meaning?
